FINDING TIME TO WRITE: The Kitchen Timer Method

Dear Kim, Am I allowed to share all of your good news because your restraint is KILLING me? At least you've shared the STARR FALL BOOK TWO launch with us, but you failed to mention all you have in the works with your SCBWI grant, your VALENTINE'S DAY anthology, and (THIS ONE REALLY KILLS ME) how you find time to write entire drafts in three days. Do you know someone? Like a TIME-STEALING fairy godmother who snatches extra time from others (me) and feeds it to you in your writing cave? Or are there other secrets that I don't know about? Frankly I think it is time for you to tell us how you do it all! Where do you find time to write? Not going to tell us, eh? Well since the start of 2017 ( I know, 12 whole days ) I've found a few things to keep my writing time on track. While not as impressive as your completed draft in three days or your time-stealing fairy, I think these tricks might just help me reach my goals with this new WIP. One VERY nice person...

The Write Process: Finding Your Muse by Kim Briggs

Every Writer follows an unspoken set of rules, at least if they are serious about writing. By serious, I mean they write EVERY day or nearly. Very rarely does a Writer take a day off. Even when they aren't writing, Writers play with their muse. Huh, what's a MUSE? A Person's Creative inspiration A Writer's brain is a crowded place. See what I mean when I talk about the voices in my head--I'm not joking. Logic dictates that when a Writer finishes her story, her characters pack up and leave. Well, that's a novel idea and WRONG. Your Lovies move to Penthouse and throw huge soirees with dozens of rowdy guests! At the end of the evening, these uninvited visitors pass out on your Persian rug and leave their empty cups and half eaten sandwiches all over the place. You kick them out, threatening them with life and limb, until you realize they lead pretty interesting lives. You weave a few threa...

Spring Fever: WIP

Spring Fever struck our household hard this week. Bicycles, t-shirts, and 3 feet of snow left. Not everyone's idea of spring, but in the Northeast, we take what we can get.  As I clear away the Irish lace and the hibernating dust bunnies and my NA WIP draws to a close, I can’t decide what I want to work on next. What does WIP mean anyway? Writers throw around acronyms like everyone knows what we’re talking about. Sorry, it’s our ‘thing.’ (but FYI, writers tend to have lots of ‘things.’ ) WIP stands for Work In Progress. And to review,   NA : New Adult YA: Young Adult MG : Middle Grade PB: Picture Book SCBWI : Society of Children Book Writers & Illustrators  As I keep adding to my list, I realize I should add an Acronym Code Page. Hmm, another day.   Spring is about clearing out the cobwebs.    I house clean for a day, maybe two. Then the urge disappears until next year. But Writing, well, I could write all day, every...

Love is in the Air

Love is in the Air...      It's February, the month of love and romance and snow. Yep, that's right, snow. If you live along the east coast, you have more than your fair share of the white stuff. Me? I love it. We ski, snowshoe, cross country ski, ice skate, snowmobile, sled--if it's a snow sport, my family wants in, but all these snow days throw a monkey wrench into my writing routine. I need a quiet place away from it all. But the kids, the dog, the cats, the turtles (well, they're ok), the husband...Yeah, he's home every snow day too, makes creative writing time during the day IMPOSSIBLE! I could get mad. I could get angry... But instead, I romp around in the snow and drink hot chocolate and eat chips and dip, and then, when the kids go to bed and my hubby falls asleep, I sneak back down to my quiet writing nook and let the voices in my head come out and play. Gosh, that sounds creepy. I love my days with my family and my nights with...
