Dear Alison, You talked me into it. I planned to wait to reveal the new, gorgeous cover for AND THEN HE designed by Najla Qamber Design s for a momentous occasion, though I don't know what momentous occasion I was waiting for. The moon landing? Missed that one by fifty years plus or minus. Mardi Gras? Missed that one by four months though some people are probably still celebrating--unfortunately, they're probably not sober enough to read books or comment intelligently on book covers--although there is a lot of drinking and questionable decision making in AND THEN HE. Fourth of July made sense, but my cover though VERY SEXY can't compete with a beer in a red Solo cup and fireworks... Dear Kim, That was a pretty sweet way to end #AuthorApril. The month culminating with our SCBWI Eastern PA crew at the Highlights Foundation, and a certain faculty member whose name fit our #AtoZChallenge perfectly. (Almost like we planned it!) It helped that Zachariah was such a good sport! This year's retreat was all about character. We kicked off the weekend with a costume party, celebrating favorite children's book characters. Hey, there you are with Effie Trinket!! Then we got down to business with our amazing faculty: Ame Dyckman, Zachariah OHora, Sean McCarthy, Leila Sales, Lauren Rille, and Meg Medina. Each faculty member shared techniques to help our writers develop strong, memorable characters. Dear Kim, Thank you for the note about Book Reviews . You are right; they are so important for the health of a book, and a way to support other writers. Today I have a slightly different take on a book review for you. This post wasn't meant to be a book review. I really just wanted to chat with you about research in fiction. But a review of a gripping book just appeared. You'll see. I was at the Foundation last week and a fellow young adult author was sitting with me. We got to talking about our "process" in writing genre fiction. While she said the Internet was the only tool that she used for research, I think she discounted all of the hours she spent drinking in pop culture, eye-binging Dexter, and reading the many fictional worlds that she and I talked over. Dear Kim, I'm still not convinced about scones. Even if Simon Snow loves them, even if by deduction we can assume that Rainbow Rowell must enjoy them because she created Simon Snow and his love of scones. I still cannot see the scone value. Taste the scone value? Just not convinced. I'll tell you what I am convinced about-- Rainbow Rowell Rocks! And not just the holy-crap-I-love-everything-she-writes kind of thing (though that is true). She rocks to the highest magnitude of awesomeness because of her response to Lin Oliver's question, "What are your assumptions about people?"
