August Goodbyes and September New Beginnings

Dear Alison, I'm sorry. I know it's been a loooonnnngggg time since I last blogged. It didn't start out intentional. In the beginning of August, it was more "I'm out in the wilds of the Adirondacks without a signal and did I mention I'm camping and hiking and playing in the woods?" Then, as you know, our family experienced a potentially traumatic incident involving my middle daughter on a Friday and an extremely traumatic incident with my youngest daughter the next day. That Friday, we witnessed a small miracle, but on Saturday, well on Saturday, we became Believers in Miracles because there is no other explanation for what happened. I tried to write a post about it as you suggested. I know writing is healing, but right now, I'm still too fragile. The wounds of my psyche too fresh. August also included the circle of life ending for Cody, my youngest daughter's lesson horse. (Yes, the poor thing lost one of her best buds too...You can cry if you...

A Time to Read

Dear Kim, Thank you for the sweet cheer up video. Hearing all of the good fortune that our little region has experienced thanks to SCBWI did make me feel a bit better (though I think Dr. Man might like to take the credit). I was spoiled with lots of uninterrupted reading time over the last week and I took full advantage. Call it research, call it recovery, whatever, it was good for the soul. I'll pass along two of the three books that I read (sorry the last, PAX, is promised to my favorite 8 year old.) I started the week with Nicola Yoon's   Everything, Everything . This beautifully designed book caught my eye in September and then promptly sat in my teetering TBR pile for months.  I made up for those months in reader-purgatory because once I started Everything, Everything I couldn't stop. One night and done. I loved the art design and feel of the pages (you get that, right?) Madeline's voice reminded me of other great contemporary teen voices that I l...

Writer Love Letter Loophole

Dear Alison, I couldn't wait until Monday... Does this count? Sharing the writing love one letter, er...video, at a time, Kim

Who Still Writes Letters? Me. That's who.

Dear Kim, Maybe it is our approaching anniversary or maybe the hearts hanging in every window of the school calling Valentine’s Day to mind, but I’m really into this love letter thing you’ve started. You know, I think I may have wooed my husband with love letter writing? Be careful. You too might feel the woo. He kept every letter from the time we lived miles apart in the beginning of our relationship all the way up to, well until the last time I wrote him a note. When was that? *Mental note: send the poor guy a card on Monday. There’s just something about that Dear salutation on top. The act of licking the envelope, pressing your pen into the now thick layers of paper to write a person’s name, maybe your true love's name, and street address on the outside. It really is...was...no, is such lovely act. As you know I was asked to write copy for a website aimed at old-fashioned letter writing. The target audience is partners who may have gotten themselves into a...
